Looking Back:
Starting out a battle with a weak pokémon and then switching to it out for a stronger one is a common strategy to help your weaker pokémon get extra EXP and level up quickly (at least prior to X/Y, which removed the need). Only problem is that you waste a turn doing it and give your opponent a free attack against the pokémon you're switching in. Which, when you're going against a tough opponent, can be a real problem.
