Yes, the NPC in the game really does say that. Even for a kid friendly game, I think that line is pushing it. So what are the differences? Aside from the obvious physical ones, anyway. Well, in Gold/Silver/Crystal, a pokémon's gender actually affected its stats. And then in Diamond/Pearl/Platinum and on some pokémon look slightly different based on their gender. Other than that, there are a handful of moves and abilities that tie into a pokémon's gender, but the main issues relate to (unsurprisingly) breeding. Which brings us back to those physical differences...
