| Looking Back: Norman is the father of either Brendan or May, depending on which you choose as your main character (the other is Professor Birch's kid). And he pretty much dismisses your challenge outright in the games as well, though he's a little more polite about it. So why didn't Brendan's parents get a house in the same town as the gym? That's a good question. I mean, there's nothing wrong with commuting, but seeing as there are no roads or tracks of any kind connecting Littleroot and Petalburg, Norman would have to either walk or bike a considerable distance to work and back every day, fighting wild pokémon all the way, or just forget about his family and live in the gym (which is pretty much what he does in Pebble Version). I originally had him say Brendan's name wrong as a minor gag because Branden is a much more popular name so it's a pretty common mistake among Pokémon fans. But it went over pretty well so getting names wrong ended up becoming one of Norman's defining character traits. |
